After the visit of the not-so-winning American Secretary of State Pompeo to Vienna last week, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg almost fell into a conversational tone during his interview with ZIB 2. Of course, the European Union’s policy in recent years had served the goal of alienating Belarus from Russia and breaking out of the close cooperation with Moscow. It may have been a coincidence to hear this clear objective in Vienna. It is only sixty kilometers from Vienna to Bratislava, the Slovak capital. There, at the end of April 2000, high-ranking representatives of the US State Department announced the American target for this region to the assembled leadership from Central and Eastern Europe. The aim was to draw a “red line” across the continent between Riga and Odessa. Westwards, American rule would prevail, right up to the changes in the Roman-influenced legal system. To the east was Russia or what would develop from Russia.
Is that the European Union’s objective of a prosperous development in Europe as the common continent? These questions are more than justified today, because responsible spokespersons from the German Bundestag are openly discussing with which political toolkit they will use to fill the last gap in the NATO lime against Russia. There is open talk of the “Maidan model” based on the coup model from the Ukraine, or the example of “round tables” on the transfer of power in Minsk is favored. All restraint is being discarded because, according to the clear and unequivocal statements of the Austrian Foreign Minister in Minsk, the harvest of years of action must now be reaped.
It will not have been a coincidence that the American Secretary of State Pompeo is currently touring Europe to bring about “loyalty in the NATO context”. Via Minsk, Moscow is to be hit and put on the American leash. The American action against “Nord-Stream 2″ is a prime example of the “policy of limited sovereignty” of Western European states based on the Bratislava model from 2000.
Since his election almost four years ago, President Trump has given the impression that he wants to bring about a peace and cooperation agreement with Moscow. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Pompeo is creating those facts in the Middle East and in Europe that are aimed at pushing Russia out of Europe and rendering it meaningless as a global political player. A few days before the commemoration of the German attack on Poland on 1 September 1939 as the completion of the dictates of revenge at Versailles in 1919, these are bad prospects for Europe.
