Berlin Corona Demonstration: Criminal, dissolved, but happy

By Uli Gellermann

People met on the steps of the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz: before the official start of the 1st German hygiene demonstration on the 28th of March in Berlin, about 20 uniformed police officers and initially a handful of defenders of the German constitution and the freedom of movement enshrined there. Despite timely registration and a long telephone call with the bureaucracy, which gave the initiators tips for the positioning of the demonstrators, the police head of operations surprisingly declared that the assembly was criminal. And also that all those assembled were not allowed to stand around in a public place and had to go home.

Box with 250 German constitutions

When the box with the 250 ordered constitutions had reached its destination, interested people grabbed them quickly until the police temporarily confiscated the box. The number of distributed constitutions should also correspond to the number of participants. – In spite of the very energetic police – the officers went from participant to participant, banned them from attending the public space, threatened with fines, one person was temporarily arrested – the atmosphere was good. There was singing about the thoughts that are free after all, and the words of Heinrich Heine were loudly declaimed: “Where three of you stand together, there you shall go apart“.

Constitution subordinated to the Protection against Infection Act

A grimace was triggered by the passing on of the police opinion on the constitution, which is currently subordinated to the Protection against Infection Act. In individual, naturally very small groups, attempts were made to discuss the legal situation. – Also present on the square: a colleague from the local radio station. He complained behind closed doors about restrictive measures in the broadcasting station: One must not have any doubts about the official Corona narrative, otherwise one would have no future in public broadcasting. Ken Jebsen (KenFM) offered all participants the tried and tested remedy against really everything: “PROpaganda” and seemed to be quite amused in other respects as well.

To the Karl-Liebknecht House of the Left Party

A view from the Volksbühne to the Left Party’s Karl Liebknecht House: Everything quiet, everything closed. “Quarantine” suspected one of the participants, another: “At least one banner wishing us good health, could have been hung out.” But that could have looked like collaboration with the “trivialisers”, but anyone who wants to form a coalition with the state-run GRÜNEN and the SPD cannot afford to do so. – Meanwhile, a man with a wolf mask over his head is being registered by the police because of the anti-masking laws, and the participants with breathing masks remain unaffected. Wrong world? No, new world order.

“If you don’t disperse now, I’ll have the place cleared.“

One last time, the head of operations contacted the contact man of the organizers: “If you don’t disperse now, I’ll have the place cleared.” Even the defenders of the constitution did not want to let it come to that, after all, there were also a few people over 70 and with previous illnesses among them, one did not want to impose so much risk on the risk group, but advised all participants to go home: “Do not let yourself be infected, also and especially not by the general panic.
